EXPERT CASES
Underground Car Park
An insurance company was concerned about the condition of the steelwork to the underground car park of an accommodation complex. The fire protection had partially disintegrated and the steel was in an advanced state of corrosion.
CIM were asked to evaluate and report on their findings with recommendations for remedial treatment.

Aviation Fuel Tanks
CIM were called in to identify the route cause of defects to a newly lined aviation fuel tank.
After a thorough interrogation of the specification and, a site evaluation and some laboratory investigations at the PRA, CIM were able to advise the clients lawyers of a technically sound approach. The case went to Arbitration and CIM's evidence was accepted in full.

Acoustic Plaster Issue
Two coats of acoustic plaster showed a level of inconsistency which the client was not satisfied with. A full interrogation of the documentation, site visit and laboratory evaluation at the PRA identified the root cause and assist the client in resolving the dispute.

Containment Coating
Containment coatings in a basement scenario is a technically challenging environment which is required to have a degree of crack bridging, easy cleanable and retain water ingress. CIM were asked to establish the root cause of the coating blistering which is complex. Site Evaluation and laboratory testing at the PRA identified the cause.

Materials Selection
Structure designs with CRA and Carbon Steel add a degree of complexity to Corrosion control. CIM and associated Engineers have capability to offer a root cause.

Pipeline Coating
Internal pipeline Coating failure requires specific knowledge of Linings and their application. CIM working alongside world leading Pipeline Engineers are able to investigate, identify root cause and offer solutions.

Failure Analysis
A Middle East client had noted a defect in a coating application on an infrastructure project after 12 months in service, CIM were asked to establish the root cause of the defect. Standard failure analysis procedures were proposed which included a Desk Study, Testing Protocol, Site Evaluation and Laboratory Testing to establish the facts. The root cause was established to a very tight timeline and presented to the client

Failure Analysis
A Polyurea Floor had given performance as expected over 95% of an application in the UK. A small area showed signs of blistering and CIM were asked to establish the root cause. A detailed study of the facts, a site evaluation and laboratory testing concluded there must be a defect in the vapour barrier. A simple solution was offered based on practical knowledge and a clear understanding of the facts

Failure Analysis
Failure Analysis on steel can be complex but Failure Analysis on concrete adds many other levels of complexity which requires collaboration with the Civils teams to identify the Root Cause. In this case, in the Middle East, a routing commissioning fill of concrete tanks revealed a delamination of the applied SF Epoxy system. The project included the development of a Testing Protocol, Root Cause Analysis and proposals for rectification. The failure of the SF epoxy was to 60,000 m2 of concrete basins in the Middle East, CIM established the root cause and offered a practical solution which was accepted by all parties. CIM trained all personnel to ensure they were competent to carry out the work, developed a PQT for all contractors to ensure compliance. David Mobbs acted as SME along with clients SME’s through the entire operation to completion and sign-off. The SF Epoxy was removed and a Polymer Modified Cementitious Coating successfully applied to the entire 60,000 m2 to the clients satisfaction.

Pipeline Coating
Carrying out failure analysis or Expert Witness work in today's environment is not easy.
We dont always have the luxury of visiting site to carry out a full evaluation. We therefore have to understand what the scenario is by interrogating the available online documents and photographs. It was was the case for Corrosion Integrity Management recently in trying to evaluate the root cause of failure on a Petrochemical Plant. The owner/operator had put the failure down to poor construction practices but it became evident there were other factors at play. Shiplo Zaman used his Engineering skills to best practice and Dr Simon Hu carried out a study on the Stainless Steel corrosion mechanisms.
The report was completed in record time and offered a number of alternative arguments to that positioned by the client. The case was brought to Tribunal and CIM successfully defended the Engineering House. The Lawyer wrote: “Please see attached the Tribunal’s determination with respect to the painting claim. You will see that the Engineering House was successful in fully defending the Owner Operators defect claim, which was dismissed in full. Your help in achieving this result has been invaluable. We hope to work together again in the future.“. The claim was defended based on a highly detailed evaluation of the facts, practical knowledge of industry and a simple response to the Respondents highly complex Expert submissions. The Tribunal could understand Mr Mobbs submission based on simple facts delivered succinctly.
