Institute of Corrosion – Young Engineers Programme (YEP)

Introduction

The YEP is a tremendous learning opportunity for Young Engineers who have been in place for a couple of years. Not only that it’s a great opportunity to meet experts in the Industry and network with the Engineering community.

This is a training programme aimed at young Engineers (graduates) in the field of Engineering. The focus is corrosion in the oil/gas industry and common practises. The programme is a series of evening lectures spread out over a 12-month period with attendance every month from January to November excluding August. In addition, the candidates will be required to complete a case study which will test the learning over the programme.

The motivation behind this programme is that it has been noticed that there is a trend with a recent influx of young engineers to the industry and therefore there is a need to ensure they obtain a wider knowledge of materials and corrosion to broaden their skill sets. In addition, young engineers are able to network with both industry experts and engineers or similar age.

The objectives of the programme are:

  • To introduce basic topics of corrosion to the younger Engineers

  • To broaden the attendee’s views and knowledge by passing on some of the experiences from the more established members

  • To create a network of younger engineers and establishing contact points

  • To help facilitate the integration between younger and older members

  • To help the younger engineers with CPD (Continuing Professional Development)

Benefits of the Programme

The programme is designed to offer benefits for the attendees, the Institute of Corrosion and any sponsoring companies. These benefits include:

  • Attendees gaining skills and knowledge on key issues in the Oil and Gas Industry

  • The lectures/workshop will form part of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the Institute of Corrosion.

  • Attendees developing teamwork and presentation skills from the workshop

  • CPD points contributing to participants’ progression to MICorr and Chartership.

  • Good opportunities for networking

  • Increasing the skill level for Engineers and decreasing the gap in knowledge between new and senior Engineers. Hence facilitating a better working environment

  • The candidates will receive free membership of the Institute of Corrosion and NACE for the first 12 months following the course

How do we do it?

The programme has two elements

The major element is the lectures given by specialists working in the Engineering Companies in the South East of England. The second element is the case studies.

The lectures

A series of 9 evening lectures over the course of 12 months which include the following topics:

  • Corrosion by Dr Jane Lomas

  • Materials Selection by Sadegh Parvizi

  • Welding & NDT by Alan Denney

  • Coatings & Linings by Malcolm Morris

  • Fire Protection by Simon Thurlbeck

  • Cathodic Protection by Trevor Osborne

  • Production Chemistry by Bill hedges

  • Integrity Management by Steve Paterson

  • Presentation Skills by David Mobbs

The Case Study

The case study will be given out at the May meeting and it will be a real case that has required a solution. The candidates are carefully positioned into groups of 4 - 5 and the Case Study allocated to them. It is expected that the groups will meet and work on these case studies in their own time, armed with their knowledge from the lecture series and their independent study. Each group will have an allocated Mentor to facilitate the working communication between the younger members with the more senior and established engineers in the community.

Each group will present the results of their case study in November at the London branch evening meeting in front of a panel of judges. Their conclusions will be assessed, and a prize awarded. Conceptually this will be an expenses paid trip for the group to visit NACE 2021 in the USA.

In addition, one candidate will be selected to attend the NACE Leadership Course also in the USA.

The Sponsors

We are extremely grateful to BP who sponsored the event and PIH who sponsored the candidate for the NACE Leadership programme and McDermott who provided the venue pre COVID.

The programme is driven by an expert panel; Trevor Osborne (chair), Alan Denney, Anthony Setiadi and David Mobbs.
